When things are humming at our 6,000 square-foot quality coffee roastery and lab in Jacksonville, FL and we’re lost in the dull roar of our 35 kg Loring, it can be easy to forget about our quieter beginnings.
Our story started over 10 years ago as just a hobby in a garage when award-winning journalist and magazine editor Jay Burnett realized that coffee could be more than just a reporter’s best friend. An early adopter to what’s now known as “third wave” coffee, Burnett has since handed off his beloved hobby to family and friends, and today, Bold Bean Coffee is full-fledged business with three retail locations and a dedicated team in constant pursuit of quality. More than just an endeavor to find the perfect balance of sweetness, acidity and body in a single cup, Bold Bean is a way to develop meaningful relationships - not only with our fellow coffee drinkers at the tail of the St. Johns River, but also with our producing partners in every country where we source coffee - from Colombia to Ethiopia to Guatemala.
Throughout the year, we travel to coffee origins to learn from our producer partners, to listen to them and understand their realities. For Bold Bean, there is a strong correlation between good coffee, good relationships and a good story. That is why, at the core of our business strategy, we believe in good storytelling built around sharing - sharing information, conversation, the occasional laugh, and, above all, the value and lessons found in a quality cup of coffee. When we do our job right, all of these blend harmoniously into a delicious cup - and with any luck, a good story. It was true more than a decade ago, when Jay cooled down from the day’s news cycle to roast away the evening hours in the garage. It’s still true today at our north Florida headquarters where the Bold Bean team sorts through the red hot logistics of a sprawling global supply chain, bringing carefully sourced and roasted coffee to a growing legion of specialty coffee consumers.
